Much effort goes into the production of The
Ceiling Fan. If you like what you hear and
would like to help us keep podcasts coming your
way, why not give to help us cover our costs.
Without you, Ethan Daniels can't stay on the air
week to week.

The Ceiling Fan is not an Odyssey fan
podcast, but a show about a kid who does an
Odyssey fan podcast.
The show's
unique spin on Adventures in Odyssey
is unlike any other podcast, with
unconventional—and even hilarious—interviews
with the cast and crew of AIO.
The Ceiling
Fan's first podcast debuted on August 4,
2008.
The very first
podcast was recorded in Nathan Hoobler's
basement. Nathan has written and directed
episodes for Adventures in Odyssey.
One of the
voices in the interview in Podcast 5 was
Josh Shepherd, former product marketing guy
for Adventures in Odyssey.
Loren Crisp
joined the team after sending in a parody of
The Ceiling Fan, in which he played all the
voices.
If you search
for "Biggest Odyssey Fan" on Google, the
Ceiling fan is not the first thing you'll
see, surprisingly. Poor Ethan.
The Ceiling
Fan was given a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
review on Edgy Podcast Reviews, a
podcast that reviews other podcasts in terms
of quality, interest, and all-around
entertainment.
Our very own
Ethan Daniels has actually made a cameo on
the Official Plugged In Podcast
before! He appears about 13 minutes in
during the December 22, 2010 edition.
Characters
Ethan Daniels
is actually voiced by an adult.
Ethan usually
drink his coffee with 11 packets of sugar.
Phil Jinkus
didn't appear on the show until episode 7.
Needless to say, every podcast host needs a
great sidekick.
Ethan Daniels
has a crush on Katie Leigh, voice of Connie
Kendall on Adventures in Odyssey.
Phil Jinkus'
favorite holiday is Valentine's Day.
The character
of Phil Jinkus is the voice of reason to
co-host Ethan Daniels, who doesn't seem to
have the best logic at times.
The concept of Phil Jinkus was first
developed by Mark Jones and Kevin McCreary
in the back row of their Political Science
class in college. This is also where many of
the earlier episodes were written. See,
college was good for something!
Over the years,
the characters of The Ceiling Fan
have developed in personality and become
more familiar to the actors. Consequently,
so have their voices.
Intern Aaron's
name was originally going to be intern
'Jared', but it was changed to 'Aaron' to
fit the Little Drummer Boy parody better.
Season 1
The first few episodes of
Season 1
feature a lower-pitched Ethan Daniels voice.
As the series progresses, voice actor Kevin
McCreary refined Ethan's character and
personality, much like that of Adventures
in Odyssey actor Will Ryan's development
of Eugene Meltsner.
Even though Charlie Roth and Kevin created
the show together, Charlie was only involved
in the very first episode (apart from the
interview he was featured in Episode 13)
Our special
behind-the-scenes interview with Katie
Leigh, voice of Connie Kendall, was over an
hour long, which had to be cut down to about
10 minutes.
Episode 16, the
show's first attempt at a video podcast, was
filmed in North Greenville University's news
room and in Kevin's dorm room.
Up until Episode 23, every episode summary
started with the title "the very (number of
episode) episode." We have re-written our
episode summaries since our early days.
Freezy the Snow
Boy wasn't originally from the world of
The Ceiling Fan. Long before Kevin had
begun working on this wonderful podcast, he
used to make silly recordings all the time
to show his friends, family, and even some
enemies! These recordings featured a variety
of characters from Kevin's imagination such
as "R. U. Chicken", "Freezy the Snow Boy",
and others. These are available in the
Early Recordings with Kevin podcast.
In the fall of
2010, Garrett wrote up a longer and more
elaborate Halloween episode. The episode was
recorded and produced, but in the end we
decided that the episode was a bit too
controversial. We scrapped the script and
re-wrote something that we thought was a bit
more Odyssey fan friendly.
In Episode 21,
James is being introduced to Phil for the
first time and he offers him something to
drink. This line is funny because, in fact,
Phil is calling in on the phone. Originally
in the script, Phil was actually supposed to
be in the room. Unfortunately, Mark wasn't
able to access his normal recording
equipment and had to record on his laptop
for this episode. When Kevin got the voice
track for the episode, he obviously wasn't
satisfied with the quality. Instead of
trying to work with the track to try to make
it sound better, he decided to just put the
whole thing through a filter to make it
sound like he was on the phone and change
some of Ethan's lines.
Sometimes when
an actor is not available to do a last
minute change to a line, we have someone who
IS available try to do an impression of that
actor so we can fill in the line. (For
example the 'oomph' of Harlow Doyle in
Episode 31, part 2, and the 'Hey Ethan!'
from Phil in Episode 38 were both done by
Loren Crisp). In Episode 34 we had Loren
perform all of the lines for 'Regis
Blackbeard'.
The official Ceiling Fan website
wasn't launched until sometime during Season 2.
We used our 6 Intern James segments and
Episode 23 to build up excitement for the
official reveal. This is when we also
released our first illustrations of main
characters Ethan Daniels and Phil Jinkus.
Season 3
Plans for a
band trip started way back during Season 2
when Phil sent Ethan a song to apologize
quitting the show.
Even though M'kalister Park
isn't a real band, a lot of the team is
currently, or has been in bands in the past.
Kevin used to be part of a heavy metal band
(he was the screamer/singer, and he even
played a bit of guitar). Mark Jones has been
involved in a few different bands (he plays
the trumpet and guitar, and a few others, as
well as produces music for quite a few
bands). Garrett currently tours the U.S. and
Canada with his family, both playing music
and acting as missionaries in a ministry
called
New Generation Ministry. He plays
just about any instrument you can think of.
During Season 3,
there were several scenes that we wrote just
for fun, knowing that there was no way we'd
ever want to use them in an episode. A few
of them actually got recorded!
Originally,
actor Dave madden was considered to do a
cameo to play the part of Phil's uncle
Bernie, but as we realized that we were
going to be using this character throughout
the season, we knew it would be too much to
ask. Fortunately, Justin was there to take
the role and has really brought the
character to life.
The news
reporter 'Daniel Withe' was named simply
because on the script, we didn't actually
know which reporter we were going to use.
The character in the script was simply
labeled WETH (Who Ever The Heck we end up
using). When it came time to record, we got
to the scene and realized we still hadn't
figured out a name. So with a little
creativity, we re-arranged the letters a bit
and ended up with a new character named
'Daniel Withe'.
During Season 3,
we ended up writing quite a few songs: some
pretty good and some, not so great.
Fortunately, there were other songs to
choose from, so we didn't have to use the
not-so-great ones. Unfortunately, we ended
up not having time to use some of the good
ones, too. However, all of those other songs
are still stashed away deep in The
Ceiling Fan files. Who knows? Maybe some
day we'll have M'kalister park do a few more
shows, or come out with a new album? You
never know what could happen on The
Ceiling Fan. Heck, we don't even know
what's going to happen half of the time!
Other
Even though
Mark, Kevin, and Justin are the only ones
who have met in real life, we have had a few
close calls in the past. Garrett visited
Colorado Springs and took a tour of Focus on
the Family without even knowing that Kevin
lived there, or that he would be working
with him eventually. An even funnier
incident happened with Loren and Mark, in
which Loren went to an Apple store in South
Carolina and took a picture of himself on
one of the phones on display. Just a few
days later, Mark happened to be in the same
store, and to his utter surprise, discovered
Loren on the background of the phone!

Originally,
Kevin wanted someone else to play all the
voices. Because of time restraints, he had
to play Ethan's voice instead.
Sometimes when
we're writing songs, we get a little carried
away. Here are some of the results.
As you can see, much
effort, planning and laughing goes into the creation
of each episode of The Ceiling Fan podcast!
